Got the post-summer holiday blues? Plan a family weekend away this autumn!
And where better than Oxford? This stunning university town is easy to get to from London, and it’s very family-friendly. The historic colleges will make your little ones feel like they’re in Harry Potter! It’s also a perfectly-sized city to see in one long weekend.
5 reasons to go to Oxford en famille:
– To wander aimlessly through the cobbled lanes of this “city of dreaming spires”
– To visit the Harry Potter filming locations which are dotted around the city
– To see the shrunken heads in the Pitt Rivers Museum
– To visit the Bodleian Library, which dates back to 1602
– To climb the tower of the Church of St Mary the Virgin
As for accommodation, why not try the fashionable, family-friendly Victor Street Residence? It has plenty of space for your kids to play and the lovely garden is a real bonus. The modern, bohemian décor is stylish and light and goes perfectly with the classic feel of this Victorian property. It is only a 10-15 minute walk from the centre of Oxford, but there are bikes available to borrow too. To get away from the bustle of the city, head to nearby Port Meadow for a peaceful walk, and stop for a drink at The Perch.
Make the most of your trip to Oxford with our other family-friendly recommendations:
Shopping: Blackwell’s is a bookworm’s dream. This world-renowned bookshop is enormous and stocks a huge range of books as well as art, posters and accessories – there will be something for every member of the family.
Eating: We love the locally-sourced food at Turl Street Kitchen, a small, authentic café whose profits go to charity. Otherwise try Thaikhun on George Street for the best Thai food in Oxford – they even have a children’s menu.
Mum tip: If your little ones are getting bored of sightseeing, take them to the Oxford Museum of Natural History. Kids love it – there are loads of artefacts that can be touched, including a stuffed cheetah!
